Swimming With Locs: What You Should Know

Swimming With Locs: What You Should Know

If you have locs/dreadlocks and you want to go swimming, there are a few things you should know to make the experience comfortable and safe.

  1. Protect Your Locs: The chlorine and salt in swimming pools and ocean water can damage your locs, causing them to become dry, brittle, and frizzy. To protect your hair, you should consider wearing a swim cap or wrapping your hair in a scarf before getting in the water. This will create a barrier between your locs and the water, helping to prevent damage.

  2. Rinse Your Locs: After you've been swimming, it's important to rinse your locs thoroughly to remove any chlorine that may have gotten trapped in your hair. This will help prevent damage and keep your hair looking healthy.

  3. Dry Your Locs: Wet locs can be heavy and uncomfortable, so it's important to dry your hair thoroughly after swimming. You can use our lint free microfiber towel to gently squeeze out excess water, or you can use a hair dryer on a low heat setting to speed up the drying process.

  4. Maintain Your Locs: Swimming can cause your dreadlocks to become tangled and matted, so it's important to take the time to carefully comb through with your fingers and maintain your hair after you've been in the water. You can use  your fingers to gently separate and detangle your hair, taking care not to pull or yank on your locs.

  5. Consider Protective Styles: If you swim frequently, you may want to consider wearing protective styles that will help keep your locs out of the water. Braids, two-strand twists, and updos are all great options that will help protect your hair from damage and make it easier to maintain.

By following these tips, you can enjoy swimming with your locs/dreadlocks without causing damage to your hair. With a little extra care and attention, you can keep your hair looking healthy, strong, and beautiful.
